In addition to the historic very poor performance of Java, the other thing that has discouraged people from developing java games is a lack of support from Sun (the creator and owner of Java).
This all changed in 2003, when the "Game Technology Group" was formed. They now have their own site - javagaming.org - which is the preferred outlet for contact with Sun on any matters to do with games development.
(In particular, there are over 3000 registered users of the forums on the javagaming site - these forums are dedicated to java games development and the particular issues facing games developers of all abilities. It's well worth dropping by the forums where there it plenty to learn for both programming newbies and games-dev experts wanting to investigate java as a platform for games development).
Historical note: This site was originally started to provide resources to the community at javagaming.org that Sun was either unable or unwilling to provide.
