Direct2D is built on top of Direct3D 10.1
It does run on Vista; however, before you can do that, you need an updated DXGI. People are discussing how to get this functionality down to Vista (e.g. service pack, etc), but nothing has been decided yet.
We've had D2D running on Windows XP; however, actually distributing it on XP is complicated because all of the components that we're dependent on (Direct3D10, DirectWrite, etc) would also need to go downlevel. Weve had a number of customers asking for XP, but we have limited resources, and our first priority is shipping a high quality Windows 7
q:what about regular D3D10? Since there's no support from Nvidia for D3D10.1, what happens there?
a 3D10.1 drivers are a logo requirement for Win7.
