In the late 1960’s I knew of a skilled billiards player who used to play for small amounts of money. Billiards, unlike snooker, is a game which has no natural conclusion so it is played until a particular score is reached ? typically a hundred up, a thousand up etc. depending on standard of play. Aware of his ability people were reluctant to play him on level terms and, consequently, he would offer opponents odds. He used to offer a choice of bets:
1. a single game of 300-up and he would give 200 start i.e. scores start 200:0, first to 300.
2. best of five games of 100-up and he would offer a two game start i.e. the match would start 2:0 in your favour, first to 3.
The second choice of bet offered was:
best of five games of 100-up and he would offer a two game start i.e. the match would start 2:0 in your favour, first to 3.
By simulating games under these rules we can shed light on the original question - which is the better bet to take and what are your chances?
help me the second question ~
